WestlawRewards® FantasySCOTUS Contest

Official Rules

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. A purchase will not increase your chances of winning. Void where prohibited by law.

Eligibility. The WestlawRewards FantasySCOTUS Contest (“Contest”) is only open for entry to legal residents of the United States, District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico who are 21 years old or older and are enrolled in a school-approved course of study as a full or part time student at participating ABA accredited law schools in the foregoing jurisdictions at the time of entry “Participant”. You must have been assigned a Westlaw password and be a WestlawRewards Member in order to enter and participate. Employees, officers and directors of Thomson Reuters (“Sponsor”), Gage Marketing Group, LLC, The Harlan Institute, their respective parent companies, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising/promotional agencies and the members of their immediate family (parents, siblings, children & spouse) regardless of where they live or those persons living in the same household of such employees/officers/directors, whether related or not, are ineligible (with the exception that Thomson Reuters Westlaw Student Representatives are eligible). NOT OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC. Void where prohibited by law.

Contest Period. Contest begins at 12:00:01 AM Central Time (CT), 10/7/13 and ends on or about at 11:59:59 PM CT, 7/31/14 (or when the last holding of the cases involved in the Contest is handed down by the United States Supreme Court (see How to Play section below)) (“Contest Period”). The Harlan Institute’s computer is the official clock for the purposes of the Contest.

How To Play.

1. During the Contest Period, go to  and follow steps to signup.  For new and existing FantasySCOTUS accounts, to participate (“Participant”), you MUST:

i)       Designate your occupation as “Law Student” from the drop down menu under “Other Information” on the user profile page.

ii)      Select the Law School that you attend from the “Your Law School” drop-down menu.

There is no cost or obligation for eligible students to obtain a FantasySCOTUS password.  Limit of one (1) FantasySCOTUS account per law student.

2. During the Contest Period, follow the steps to predict how each of the nine Justices of the United States Supreme Court will vote for each of the following cases:

Town of Greece v. Galloway
Burt v. Titlow
Cline v. Oklahoma Coalition for Reproductive Justice

Executive Benefits Insurance Agency v. Arkison
Fernandez v. California
Madigan v. Levin
McCullen v. Coakley
Michigan v. Bay Mills Indian Community

A Justice can vote to AFFIRM, REVERSE the lower court, or RECUSE from the case and not cast a vote.  Participants can make predictions at any point before the case is decided, though predictions will be disabled on all days the Supreme Court announces that opinions will be released.  For each correct guess, Participants will receive 10 points. If a user correctly guesses the votes of all nine Justices, he or she will receive a bonus 10 points.

By entering the Contest, each Participant warrants that their right to participate is not restricted in any way. Should Sponsor or Administrator become aware of any potential dispute between Participants and/or any alleged collaborator that would impair the validity of participation for purposes of this Contest, Sponsor reserves the right in its sole discretion to exclude Participants from the Contest.

How to Win: The three (3) Participants with the highest number of points by 11:59:59 PM CT, 7/31/14, (or when the last holding of the cases involved in the Contest is handed down by the United States Supreme Court)  will win a National Grand Prize of one (1) Black’s Law Dictionary Deluxe, Ninth Edition and 10,000 WestlawRewards Points. The two (2) Participants with the next highest number of points by 11:59:59 PM CT, 7/31/14, (or when the last holding of the cases involved in the Contest is handed down by the United States Supreme Court) will win a National First Prize of 10,000 WestlawRewards Points. The Participant with the highest number of points by 11:59:59 PM CT, 7/31/14 (or when the last holding of the cases involved in the Contest is handed down by the United States Supreme Court) for each eligible participating law school will be a Law School Grand Prize  winner (one (1) winner per eligible law school), subject to verification. If an eligible school does not have participants, a prize will not be awarded to that school.  Limit of one (1) prize per Participant.  Winners of a National Grand or First Prize, are not eligible to win a Law School Grand Prize.

In the event of a tie, a random drawing of tied entries will be conducted by the Sponsor to determine the winner. Decisions of the Sponsor are final. Potential winners will be notified by email.


Three (3) National Grand Prizes: First and Second Year Law Students –  One (1) Black’s Law Dictionary Deluxe, Ninth Edition. (ARV: $87) and 10,000 WestlawRewards Points. (ARV: $127.50). Total National Grand Prize ARV: $214.50

Third Year Law Students – One (1) Black’s Law Dictionary Deluxe, Ninth Edition. (ARV: $87) and one (1) $128 Visa gift card.  Total National Grand Prize ARV: $215. 

Two (2) National First Prizes:  First and Second Year Law Students10,000 WestlawRewards Points. (ARV: $127.50).  Third Year Law Students – one (1) $128 Visa gift card.

 (Maximum 202) One (1) Law School Grand Prize winner from each participating eligible school): First and Second Year Law Students – 1,000 WestlawRewards Points. ARV: $12.75

Third Year Law Students – winner’s choice of one (1) $12.75 or iTunes gift card.

Prizes consist of only those items specifically listed as the prize. Gift cards are subject to terms and conditions contained on gift cards. Sponsor is not responsible for lost or stolen gift cards. iTunes is a trademark of Apple, Inc. Apple, Inc. is not affiliated with this promotion.

WestlawRewards Points – Winners must be or become WestlawRewards Members.   Existing WestlawRewards Members must be in good standing with an assigned Westlaw student password.  If winner isn’t a WestlawRewards member, they must join by 7/31/14 (or when the last holding of the cases involved in the Contest is handed down by the United States Supreme Court (see How to Play section below)), or prize will be forfeited and awarded to the next highest point winner for that school. WestlawRewards Points Claims. Usage of WestlawRewards Points is subject to the Terms and Conditions of the WestlawRewards Program, available at WestlawRewards Points are redeemable for merchandise specified in the WestlawRewards online catalog.

All federal, state and local taxes are the sole responsibility of winner. Any Commonwealth of Puerto Rico taxes or assessments levied on the prizes as of the date of delivery thereof to the winner shall be the sole responsibility of the winner of the sweepstakes. All federal, state and local laws and regulations apply. Any unspecified incidental expenses associated with acceptance and/or use of prize is winner’s sole responsibility. Winners will be notified by email. Prizes are non-transferable and cannot be assigned. No prize substitution, but Sponsor may, at its sole discretion, substitute cash or a prize of equal or greater value if advertised prize becomes unavailable for any reason.

Prize Claim Process: First and Second year law students will have their WestlawRewards Points automatically deposited in their WestlawRewards accounts.  Third year law student Potential Winners will be contacted via e-mail and must respond to the e-mail within ten (10) days.  If e-mail is not responded to such prize will be forfeited and the next Participant with the next highest points will be awarded a National Grand Prize or Law School Grand Prize.

Conditions of Participation: Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel, modify, or suspend the Contest should a virus, bug, unauthorized human intervention or other cause beyond the control of Sponsor, corrupt or impair the administration, security, fairness, or proper play of the Contest. In such event, the Participants with the most points at the point of the Contest being canceled will be deemed the winners. Notice of such action by Sponsor will be posted on Except as specified herein, any other attempted form of Contest entry is prohibited and void. Neither Sponsor nor any of its agencies are responsible for late, lost, incomplete, or misdirected predictions; lost, interrupted or unavailable network, server or other connections, miscommunications, computer hardware or software malfunctions or other technical failures of any kind, ISP/network/website accessibility or availability, garbled or jumbled transmissions or other errors of any kind, whether human, mechanical or electronic; including without limitation the incorrect or inaccurate capture of prediction or account set up information regardless of cause. Sponsor is not responsible for incorrect or incomplete Contest information, whether due to electronic, mechanical or other errors, unauthorized access to the website or other cause. Use of robotic, automated, programmed or like means to enter the Contest multiple times in violation of the above-indicated account limitation will void all points affected by such methods. Sponsor reserves the right to disqualify any Participant it finds, in its sole discretion, to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Contest or website; or who is in violation of the terms of use of the website as set forth in the Harlan Institute’s  privacy policy. INTERNET CAUTION: ANY ATTEMPT BY AN INDIVIDUAL TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE ANY WEBSITE OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THIS PROMOTION IS A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS, AND SHOULD SUCH AN ATTEMPT BE MADE, SPONSOR RESERVES THE RIGHT TO SEEK DAMAGES FROM ANY SUCH INDIVIDUAL TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW INCLUDING CRIMINAL PROSECUTION.

General Terms: By participating, entrants release and agree to hold harmless Thomson Reuters, Gage Marketing Group, LLC, the Harlan Institute, their respective parent companies, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising/promotional agencies, and the employees, officers, directors, shareholders and agents of any of the above organizations from any and all liability for any injuries, losses or damages to person (including death) and/or property of any kind caused in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, by participation in the Contest or the acceptance, possession or use/misuse of prize or participation in any prize-related activities. Where legal, by accepting prize, winner agrees to the use of winner’s name and address (city, state), likeness, photograph and/or voice as well as any statements made by winner regarding the Contest or Sponsor (provided they are true) for advertising/publicity/trade purposes, including use on the and/or website(s), without notice or further compensation.

You understand that you are providing your information to the Harlan Institute and not to Thomson Reuters.  The information you provide will be handled in accordance with the Harlan Institute’s Privacy Policy.
